When I took Latin in the 1950s, there were three genders, "masculine," "feminine," and "neuter." Gender was grammatical. Sex was biological, and there were two of them, "male" and "female." A word's gender frequently conflicted with our 20th-century stereotypes. Farmer/feminine.
