It was only very recently I found out those Higgins landing craft were made of PLYWOOD!! Only the front door was metal; not for the soldiers safety but to support heavy equipment they often carried and rolled down the lowered door/ramp. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCVP_(United_States) …

They had to be plywood and light as possible. If the draft is too deep they can’t land close to shore and the soldiers would drown.
