Actually they surrandered when Soviets declared war and Soviet occupation was looming. Better chance to surrander to american forces. A-bombs had little or no effect, since prior fire bombings had done worse damage all ready.

The Japanese government were unconcerned with conventional loss of life. Thus, fire bombing major cities and killing vast numbers of civilians was not a remarkable event. The war effort continued until the shock of 1 bomb, make that 1 more bomb, penetrated their stupor.

Yes, we were fighting fanatics that were expecting their will to sacrifice themselves to be greater than our will to win, but when faced with the real possibility of the Japanese race being exterminated they finally surrendered. That was the only way to win against the Japs.
