My grandfather worked on the atomic bomb in Oak ridge, TN. He hated it but also felt it was necessary. He also said it was a true race to see who would get it first.

Yes it was. They had YEARS to surrender, during which they KNEW defeat was imminent. The fact they dragged it out FAR past the time at which they could obtain victory, caused the horrible deaths of millions of people, many of them civilians/slaves. The end HAD to be decisive.
