It wasn't just Senators. Most southern Congressmen left the Democratic Party and became Publicans, including huge racist assholes like Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms and Mills E. Godwin, Jr. This was a Goebbels level piece of propaganda though.

In 1928, Southern Protestants didn’t want to vote for the Catholic Yankee, Al Smith, from New York. But they were still solid for Democrats in Congress. Same goes for 1952/56 where they picked the General over the egghead, Adalai, and still returned Democrats to Congress.

Southern White Democrats did in fact join the Republican Party after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But the Southern Strategy took time. And since parties in the US are decentralized, the local Southern Democratic Party had the autonomy to oppose the civil rights movement.
