No, the vast majority of Americans don’t know because our educational system blows. Without it, the populous of a few major cities/states could determine the outcomes of policy for all, which would be horribly detrimental to society.

Sadly I was in my 30s before I educated myself on the importance of the electoral college. It’s no wonder certain individuals want to abandon it. I’m sure we’d all be happy in the United States of California...or New York. The founders had timeless wisdom.

Without the Electoral College, the United States of America would be reduced to the "United States of New York and California" with 48 other vassal states. This is exactly the tyranny that our Founders prevented by creating the Electoral College.
