I know that traditionally, only government can do censorship. But in this day and age of information wrangling, aren't the private entities who manage the gates whereby most information is routed in a position to do what is moreorless the same thing?

If the actions of Google and social media giants like Facebook can threaten to silence views without their ever being allowed to be voiced, while amplifying their opposition, what distinguishes this from the government doing the same via political channels?
