A few katakana words I've recently seen mistranslated. フォロー (often "cover for" rather than "follow") スタイル (often "figure" rather than "style") カメラマン (often "photographer" rather than "cameraman") カンニング ("cheating" rather than "cunning")

蛍 (ほたる, firefly) + 族 (ぞく, tribe) = 蛍族 etymology: due to non-smoking policies in apartment buildings, some smokers go out to the balcony to smoke. from afar, the lights from these cigarettes look like fireflies.

This is some interesting etymology. サック is actually “sack” in this case, which is what finger cots are called in Japanese. メリケン can mean both “American” and “punch the shit outta someone” (‘cause that’s what Americans do, of course).

When I'd only been in JP for a few weeks and only knew textbook JP. GF at the time: 生理が終わるまでエッチが出来ないよ。(I can't have sex until my period [SEIRI] is over.) My dumb ass: 整理?何の整理があるの?手伝うよ!(Organizing [SEIRI]? What do you need to organize? I'll help!

Know the ropes... Thickness: 綱 > 縄 > 紐 > 糸 綱(つな) rope (Think 綱引き [つなひき] "tug of war") 縄(なわ) also rope (Think 縄跳び [なわとび] "jump rope") 紐(ひも) string; cord (Think 靴紐 [くつひも] "shoe lace") 糸(いと) thread (also note the small 糸 in the kanji above!)

The women who continually repeat the name of candidates on political sound trucks are called 鶯嬢(うぐいすじょう), a word which compares their voices to the sweet sounds of the "uguisu" or bush warbler.
