You can use of #radar spectrum width to show dev. of #Irma's secondary #eyewall b/c it depicts areas of strong boundary layer turbulence.pic.twitter.com/FwlKnEQshK

I think it helps diagnose an #ERC is actually occurring w/ #Irma. Still unknown how it may finish, but seems more classic than last night.

Correction- this is specific differential phase & NOT spectrum width. SDP still useful to id dbl eyewall b/c it highlights heavy rain rates.

This is what spectrum width actually looks like. Both SDP&SW highlight double eyewall, but one by enh. rain rates, & one by enh. turbulence!pic.twitter.com/7mS49smRlh

I'm confused. Your image is KDP and your tweet says SW. Did I miss something?

Was going to say same thing. KDP will show extreme rain rates or (at higher levels) updraft microphysics. Spectrum width shows enh turbulnce

Steve Nesbitt @70_dbz has some nice plots up of spectrum width. Would link but don't know how.

Yep you guys are right. Thought it was spectrum width, but it's actually KDP... though you do see the same signature using SW.pic.twitter.com/zxIsrN5WGK

how is it possible that this is happening while the Hurricane maintains 185 MPH with lowering central pressure???!!!??

Eyewall Replacement Cycles are part of the strengthening process, the storm comes back stronger after each one

yes but don't they usually drop in wind speed and gain central pressure during?

The majority do, but about 28% of TCs actually intensify after the secondary eyewall formation - at least that was found w/ Pacific TCs.

Could #Irma have her ERC, and end up stronger than before? Environment is right, is it not?
