Current theory: progressive enhancement will never amount to much if we continue to get distracted by shiny new browser features.

@ppk counter theory: PE is important to some, and not to others. Then there's those who just want to make.

@rem Wouldn't it be possible that those that are not interested in PE are very interested in new features?

@ppk absolutely. But I doubt if its binary (I don't expect you do either).

@rem It's just that, as far as I know, nobody said this before. And I think it needs to be said.

@ppk @rem I see it as the complete opposite: progressive enhancement provides the only sensible way to play with shiny new features.

@ppk can you expand on that thought? How do new browser features harm PE? Do you mean as if used irresponsibly with no fallback?

      2. Peter-Paul Koch ‏@ppk 26 Jul 2015

@trodrigues Yes, I'm going to expand this. As to tools, I think we should ditch them altogether.

@ppk and I think we should understand their advantages and have better education around them.

@ppk This bothers me every day. It's 2015 and we still need to manually build localized datepickers with timezone support for instance.

@SchizoDuckie Not quite what I mean, but you can use input type="date" on mobile, at least. On mobile the experience is GREAT.

@ppk "progressive enhancement" is just a fundamentally wrongheaded idea.

      2. Peter-Paul Koch ‏@ppk 26 Jul 2015

@ExtAnimal You will have to defend that idea in a longer piece, I think. Right now I disagree with you.

        @ppk Yeah, I can't in 140 characters.

@ppk I don't think that's defensible. Might be wrong for some web efforts, but not most. Worth a read, @ExtAnimal: http://jakearchibald.com/2013/progressive-enhancement-still-important/ …

@kethinov @ppk Depends whether you see it as a document, or a fully functional application with buttons, panels, sliders etc.

@extanimal @ppk there's no reason most apps can't be both. Only the following types can't be: http://www.sitepoint.com/javascript-dependency-backlash-myth-busting-progressive-enhancement …

@ppk in any case I would argue people using new development tools and frameworks irresponsibly is a much bigger issue for PE

@trodrigues @ppk what does “irresponsibly” mean though?

        0 retweets 0 likes
      3. Tiago Rodrigues ‏@trodrigues 26 Jul 2015

@nortools @ppk example: just because you can do client side rendering, doesn't mean you should on all situations.
