    An update on Wordle

Since launching Wordle, I’ve been in awe of the response and the game has gotten bigger than I ever imagined.

On the flip side, it has been a little overwhelming. I am just one person, and it is important to me that, as Wordle grows, it continues to provide a great experience to everyone.

Given this, I am incredibly pleased to announce that I’ve reached an agreement with The New York Times for them to take over running Wordle going forward. If you’ve followed along with the story of Wordle, you’ll know that NYT games play a big part in its origins and so this step feels natural to me.

I’ve long admired the NYT’s approach to their games and the respect with which they treat their players. Their values are aligned with mine on these matters and I’m thrilled that they will be stewards of the game moving forward.

When the game moves to the NYT site, it will be free to play for everyone, and I am working with them to make sure your wins and streaks are preserved.

Thank you all.

Quote from a New York Times article:

On this centenary of James Joyce’s colossus, we can borrow a thought from W.B. Yeats’s poem “The Fascination of What’s Difficult”: Is “Ulysses” hard because it’s great, or do people assume it’s great because it’s hard?

“It’s hard because Joyce put a lot in there,” Dan Mulhall, the Irish ambassador, told me. “A lot of people are drawn to the novel because of its complexity and derive a lifelong satisfaction from delving into it more deeply. It’s like Wordle for serious readers.”

This madman actually went ahead and wrote a Wordle-to-Townscaper converter (like 2 seconds after I jokingly floated the idea). To mark the occasion I'll reluctantly share my embarrassing attempt at today's Wordle.

Wordle has given me a non-heavy reason to check in with friends and family every day in these heavy times, while sometimes claiming intellectual superiority over them. Except for the one day I didn't solve it -- I didn't text anybody that day. Thanks .

I've mastered Wordle. My new game is trying to create words and intentionally avoid the correct word in order to make patterns. Wordle 207 6/6 ⬜⬜🟩⬜⬜ ⬜🟩⬜🟩⬜ 🟩⬜🟩⬜🟩 ⬜🟩⬜🟩⬜ ⬜⬜🟩⬜⬜ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

A byproduct of this change is that affected users may skip a puzzle. E.g. If you played #204 yesterday you may end up with #206 today. I am sorry to deprive you of a Wordle. 2/2

Today I fixed a long standing bug in Wordle's puzzle selection code that was causing folks in certain timezones to get the incorrect puzzle. This largely affected my friends in Australia and New Zealand. 1/2
