    The Mental Health Act needs to be updated so that 16 and 17 year olds have a legal right to consent or refuse mental health treatment, just as they have the right to consent or refuse physical health treatment.

    At 16 & 17 years old, you can consent to chemotherapy but can't refuse ECT. Undeniable need to reform legislation !

    Currently, people aged 16 and 17 can consent to cancer treatment but cannot refuse electro-convulsive therapy (ECT). People cannot wait any longer to have their rights protected. The Mental Health Act, 2001 must be urgently updated.
