Lluis Masanes has a permanent position at ! I feel very fortunate to have such a great colleague, and the opportunity to continue to work with someone who has such a deep understanding of quantum theory! 2/2

Heck, if an amateur like me can take a stab at this problem (I think gets around a number of objections people have had to information destroying theories), then the game is still wide open and we ought not to prejudge it's outcome. 7/7

are theoretical clues, and really great ones. And I suspect we will resolve this mathematical inconsistency well before we could even hope to have an experiment which would tell us whether black holes preserve information. 6/n

then you haven't resolved the paradox. This is such a difficult problem that if you resolve it, you've probably successfully constructed a consistent theory of gravity. So, if anything, the black hole information problem (along with calculating the black hole entropy), 5/n

the paradox. They don't, because they don't provide an explanation of how information gets out of the black hole while respecting low energy physics. Advocates of the AdS/CFT conjecture can claim black holes preserve information, but if you don't explain how this happens 4/n

the equivalence principle, or low energy effective field theory, or locality, or lead to catastrophic energy non-conservation. All of which are already ruled out by observation. I disagree with the article that recent results in string theory like replica wormholes resolve 3/n

A consistent theory must either explain how information escapes black holes, or explain how information can be destroyed. And doing so while still respecting the low energy theory places incredible constraints on it. Attempts to explain the paradox tend to result in violating 2/n

I'm sympathetic to some of 's critique of modern physics, and it's true that without experimental data, reconciling quantum theory with gravity is exceedingly difficult. But the black hole information paradox is one of the best clues we have and it's a theoretical one. 1/n

Condensed matter physics is so cool! Bounce 4 laser beams off mirrors to make an interference pattern with 8-fold symmetry. Put a Bose-Einstein condensate of potassium atoms into this "optical lattice" and you get a SUPERFLUID CRYSTAL! But that's not all... (1/n)

It's not often you see the phrase "I'm shitting bricks" in , but it's not often that mathematicians claim to solve a problem like Connes' embedding conjecture. Surprised this isn't on the front page of all the other tabloids!

Tomorrow I'll talk about Post-Quantum Classical Gravity at The Quantum Information Structure of Spacetime Workshop . Thanks to the organisers of QISS for using remote talks to help cut CO2 emmisions! It also allows me to speak later at the UCL PhysSoc 1/2
