Ok, that’s not really relevant. Rape culture and patriarchy depend on women. More importantly, though, I find your responses interesting. One of the most problematic issues in this entire, long, multi-fora conversation is that the not all of the personal relationships 1/

dynamics at play are not equally clear to all who chime in, myself included. IMO that has an effect on the super-fast ad hom reactions and accusations, the movement from “said something shitty” to “completely shitty person.” It’s then not as clear if people are 2/

involving themselves because of ideas, approaches to problem solving, or because they want to defend friends (obvs it’s never one thing). You’re busy explaining why the title is really ok. @AdmiralHip just did the same — the fact that the book is apparently about rape culture 3/

makes the title unproblematic and should prevent accusations of misogyny. Which, by the way, I never made. I haven’t read @erik_kaars thread yet, so I may be talking at cross purposes. I will look at it as soon as I am done with this. But someone, I think @ISASaxonists 4/

was all-caps-ing SLANDER! My point was not that @erik_kaars is a misogynist or fan of rape, but rather that, if we apply the same standards to all people involved in this discussion, it’s fair to question the choice of title and not inconsistent to draw unkind 5/

& inaccurate conclusions. Like, for example, that I am a homophobe based on the OT. FWIW, I agree the full title makes it much clearer that Lie Back... is used facetiously. Having said that, It’s still problematic bc it’s too much of an in-joke for ppl who understand 6?/

the implicit critique in the rest of the title. If we’re supposed to be working to correct misappropriations and false understandings beyond our classrooms & unis, then maybe not repeat a well-worn rapey phrase? Plus, original point... not apply double standards /end

What this is really starting to show us here at the journal is that being asked to pay better attention to structural racism in the field as well as to how many are being harmed by misappropriations of medieval history causes a lot of defensiveness. It’s painful to watch.

It’s also been disheartening & demoralizing to see how those who want to argue with the antiracist scholars are doing so by: questioning their credentials, calling them imbeciles, ridiculing their supppsed lack of knowledge — or, as here, looking for any shall thing to critique.

shall = small Ultimately, this is pretty depressing to watch unfold. Everyone in these discussions are scholars & worthy of respect. But racism has no place in our field. If that’s something you want to argue about, it doesn’t really matter what your specialty is. We’re lost.

I'm not the only one who has moved sideways because it was one thing too many to deal with. This is ironic for far too many reasons.

What if ... there were more than one way to be anti-racist? Or even to be anti-racist in similar or the same ways, yet not be on board with a particular group of anti-racists for reasons?

It’s also been demoralizing to see white colleagues at the forefront of the nastiness and dogpiling, yet blithely assuming that those complaining about the dogpiling — which is a form of bullying — are complaining about BIPOC, rather than those more numerous “allies.”
