Classical genetic algorithms miss a critical part that evolution has — DNA encodes both the properties of a specimen and the encoding itself, making encoding variable and subject to improvement. In standard genetic algorithms we devise the encoding ourselves.

Note that plain genetic programming is just genetic algorithms over some fixed encoding of programs, which is not the thing I am describing.
