@TheCocoaNaut which app version ate you on? Slack 2.3 is much better.
I am in 6 slack channels. 1.5GB RAM consumed by the desktop app. In 100+ IRC channels. 25MB consumed by irssi. The future is rubbish.

maybe its your problem that can't afford much memory, RAMs are cheap!

I use weechat. I've joined about 5 channels, proxied to my mobile phone. How do you manage to read over 100 channels?

I don't read all of all of them, and have judicious use of hilights and irssi notifier.
