#6: Keep your team and community as close as reasonably possible. One way we do this is by keeping our team comms in our community Discord server. This may be untenable one day, but for now, it embeds strong user empathy/focus into the day to day.

#5: Be thoughtful about your compensation philosophy day 1. For , we have docs on our comp philosophy, perks & benefits, salary function, and an equity calculator. How you compensate is an important part of culture & we wanted to be intentional about this early on.

#4: Highest ROI recruiting approaches for us in order: (1) Recruiting in-network, (2) recruiting agencies, (3) cold sourcing. In-network recruiting was effective up to a point. We now work with some great recruiting agencies (in progress, happy so far, dm if you want recs!)

#3: Start working with a great accounting and legal firm as early as you can, but definitely post-fundraise. Look for great partners who can advise you and that you can trust to have your back. We work with and at . Would recommend!

#2: Document how your company works as you go. We use for our internal ops, product/engineering docs, sync agendas, etc. The specific tool doesn’t matter much. But good company docs are crucial for onboarding new teammates and tracking as your company grows/iterates.

#1: Invest in an ATS. Most early-stage, VC-backed startups have to hire. Unless you are sourcing from a very small/known pool of talent, an ATS can keep things organized and can serve as a valuable foundation for your recruiting practice as you grow. We use at Tephra 👍

When you know for sure that it's time to move on, take all the steps you need to close out the product and/or team. But in the meantime, do whatever you can to preserve the existing momentum.

Once a product or a team has effectively stopped, it can be extremely difficult & time-consuming to resuscitate its forward motion.

Something I've learned the hard way in product-building is that, even in moments of indecision when deciding how to move forward, you should keep the momentum of your existing product/team alive as much as possible.

A dear friend of mine sent me this 2010 article by Michael Arrington about why people become entrepreneurs. It's not about getting rich or becoming renowned. It's about the adventure itself. 🦜🏴☠️

My basic understanding is that Mirror (which we use currently for ) is web3-native, but Substack is more feature-rich and probably a better product for those who are interested in building more of an audience

Moving my assets off of Coinbase this weekend. Coinbase listing customer assets on their balance sheet was already a bit concerning a few months ago. I'm grateful for how easy it is to move crypto off centralized exchanges and into wallets only you own/control
