Too many ancient human genomics papers to keep up with? and I have drafted a one-stop-shop review of what you need to know. Looking for comments from colleagues.

This is great, thanks a lot. I'd just add one more layer. What do you reckon?

How can we understand the conceptual friction and misunderstandings between genetics and archaeology (and perhaps society more broadly)? An attempt from TAG panel discussion with and many others

A fantastic new study out this week on ancient DNA from prehistoric Cameroon from Lipson, , , Reich et al. I talked to / and about what it reveals about Africa's past.

"asking how British you think you are, and finding out by testing the DNA" DNA doesn't provide the answer to questions about identity. Even putting identity aside, no clear line could be drawn around British ancestry in NW Europe's past (or beyond)

To clarify, almost every comparable country has the same age trend, but the UK seems extreme. Makes it interesting to think about underlying factors (internationalism/brexit, inherited wealth, housing crisis etc), for which the UK may also distinguish itself.

Does any comparable country have politics that are as stratified by age (but not gender) as the UK? Certainly not e.g. Sweden or the US, or others that I am less familiar with.

Dogor lived in Siberia 18,000 years ago, and as some of you may notice had a bath since my SMBE talk this summer. Genius naming by ‘s Russian colleagues. aDNA by at & Anders Bergström here at coming soon

We now have some news on the 18,000 year old or puppy. Genome analyses shows it's a male. So we asked our Russian colleagues to name it... Thus, the name of the puppy is Dogor! Dogor is a Yakutian word for "friend", which seems very suitable.

IMHO 4 published archaic mixture episodes with strong DNA evidence: ~2% Neandertal ancestry mostly outside Africa 50-60ky (Green 2010) ~3% Denisovan in Oceania (Reich 2010) Neandertal ancestor of Oase1 (Fu 2015) ~0.1% Denisovan in East Asia (Browning 2018)

is working on this specimen together with . It's 18 kyrs old! So far, we have sequenced it's genome to 2X coverage. But we still can't say if it's a or a . Maybe it's the common ancestor? More sequencing needed! (Photo: S Fedorov)
