For all the people who left #github and migrated to #gitlab on a rush because you don't like Microsoft, welcome to Microsoft #Azure 😁😁😁pic.twitter.com/mhJSTv8HWg

There's a very distinct difference between trusting a company to host something, and trusting them to manage something.

Well, Microsoft has committed to keep #github open, independent, and multi-platform https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2018/06/04/microsoft-github-empowering-developers/ … OTOH, gitlab is now funded by Google, do you trust Google managing gitlab any better? ;-)pic.twitter.com/lXZOvemLcV

Google is *funding* gitlab, they're not yet *managing* gitlab. Again, important difference. Microsoft has a long history of letting its corporate interests in one field sneak into another field. I don't trust them enough to not have an exit plan.

Do you really think somebody would give you such a huge amount of money and then tell you "Carry on, do as you please, I'm not looking into your strategy or tactics, I'm sure my money will be just fine"? :-)

Yes, I do, actually. That's kind of the point of that kind of funding other companies. And even if they didn't, then influencing strategy is still a far cry from having direct access to the "delete project" button.

Well, they pressed the "Move your assets to my cloud" button pretty quickly 😉

Again, difference between trusting them to host, and trusting them to manage. I also would not trust Google, or Oracle, or basically any large company with its separate-from-the-source-collaboration-platform software stack to take over management of github or gitlab.

As I mentioned before, the #Linux Foundation has a slightly better opinion on the matter: "This is pretty good news for the world of #OpenSource and we should celebrate #Microsoft’s smart move." :-)https://www.linuxfoundation.org/blog/microsoft-buys-github-the-linux-foundations-reaction/ …

And if you hadn't split the thread, it would be clear that the Linux foundation appears to be more trusting than I am willing to be.https://twitter.com/polvanaubel/status/1004814230330200064 …

Large companies with their own software stacks have a long history of letting business concerns from across the corporation interfere with activities on the other end. The Linux foundation is not concerned this might happen again here; I am, regardless of "statements of intent".
