as an undergrad, I got a request for tenure a letter for a prof I took a seminar from. His grad student came in to speak once, and the PI was quite disrespectful to the student. I really regret not returning the letter saying that, even if it wouldn't have made a difference

For departments that solicit confidential feedback from trainees, all letters are seriously considered. A pattern of several negative letters has an impact.

Fantastic idea! Negative letters might be more likely to come from people who were forced out of academia and finding them and others who 'didn't make it' might be more difficult. How can we make sure all voices are heard?

Good and important point. The tenure candidate submits names and contact details of all past trainees and can exclude 1 (most of us have one who had a bad experience), all the rest are fair game

Yes! More brilliant ideas. Let’s purge academia of the Kiss-Up,Kick-Down folk. Rolling out anonymous lab survey this month!

Yes, and emphasis on *past*, I have seen trainees horribly pressured to produce glowing letters.

But I sadly do not have faith that this would actually work. I can easily see a committee ignore this behavior, explain it away but "one bad personality class" or something.

If it's one letter, that could happen. But if there's a history of multiple trainees having similar bad experiences, that cant be ignored. Also, an internal committee having biases is an excellent arguement for have an external review committee perform tenure app reviews
