It's the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and I am going to be live-tweeting the ordeal of submitting 10 LORs to 10 different biomedical PhD program portals 1/n
Step 1 - take standard letter of recommendation and change the address heading to match the program. If you make a mistake and send the Brandeis letter to Penn for instance, that program will say "well OBVIOUSLY the professor doesn't care about this student" 2/n
Step 2 - plunging in! Now need to search my inbox for the 10 different invitations from 10 programs and match them to the correct student who is applying. Supporting 3 people this year, so have about 50 PhD LOR invitations somewhere in there.
Worst nightmare would be to send letter for Candidate 1 to the email link for Candidate 2. Trying to concentrate and not f*ck that up!
@MIT portal: 2 pull-downs - 1 asking me to judge how the applicant rates compared to other MIT student. How the hell should I know? Also demanding that I customize letter for MIT. Yeah right!!! 3/n
@JohnsHopkins portal: no pull-downs! BUT must fill in full address, and they give error message if address is not to their liking. They can't Google @RockefellerUniv ?!? But otherwise, best portal so far 4/n
What is up with this "In place of your signature, please type your full legal name:" How is this helpful in establishing my identity for these dumb portals?!? Signing "Donald Q. Duck" for the next one 5/n
Ruh-Roh, setback! Penn uses the dreaded CollegeNet interface, which does a time-consuming "Browser Check" and then demands a password. Do not remember password. Must reset password 6/npic.twitter.com/cG6ZsoXqdJ
@Penn reset password! But now must login again. Then Browser check. Then must read privacy policy, click to accept. Then click on student name. Then fill out full address for @RockefellerUniv. Again, is this info not easily discoverable on the interwebs? 7/npic.twitter.com/zM16qr2XFz
@Penn has pull-downs establishing how long you have known the person (obvs already in LOR), then a complicated way of asking how they rate? If you say anything but top 5% the person will be rejected. SO JUST LIE. I am serious, nuance is not appreciated by programs. 8/pic.twitter.com/ZRHp04IW3J
@scrippsresearch FOR THE WIN. Best LOR interface so far. Click on link, select PDF, click submit. Everyone please apply to the Scripps PhD program - @ardemp and many other fantastic people. 9/n
@nyuniversity again with the address validation, 4 radio buttons, including "would you take this person into your lab". This is a new one tho: not enough to select PDF, must click "upload" button. Multiple "are you sure you want to submit" bullsh*t buttons 10/
@nyulangone NYU Sackler interface is the worst so far: 10 pulldowns, 2 additional questions to which the only appropriate answer is "SEE LETTER". Plus can't @nyuniversity have 1 portal for all of its PhD programs?!? 11/npic.twitter.com/o1whZ8wA2X
I was excited by the simplicity of the @BrandeisU portal, but again you need to click "upload" before submitting. Can't some coding genius do some coding to link those actions at the backend of the websit #JustSayin 12/n
Also... @BrandeisU will not accept a PhD LOR until you type in the zip code and use the state pull-down to indicate that @RockefellerUniv is indeed in New York State. But Brandeis already knew that, I am pretty sure. 13/n
