Robert E Lee is buried in Lexington, VA. This is not his grave. This is a meaningless pedestal to a man who, in a time of civic crisis, chose to betray his country.

This is a ridiculous excuse, divorced from historical context and pleading ignorance to the reality of the purpose of monuments

Wait, so you're saying it doesn't even matter if it's not his grave? We also have to respect monuments to all dead people?

It was erected in 1948 in a state that wasn't part of the confederacy. Like, Lee literally fought against Maryland.

If the purpose of monuments is to commemorate persons or events worthy of national pride, are you arguing Lee is worthy of that expression? What did Lee do for our Republic, except fight against it?

And "divorced from historical context"? Really @politicalmath? This is an appallingly poor research on your part. This statute was erected in 1948, in a state that did not secede from the Union, to commemorate a CONFEDERATE victory. Who is making ridiculous excuses here?

So if I build a monument to Stalin right on your front lawn, are you just.. utterly powerless to do anything about it? Because to do otherwise would desecrate Stalin's grave?

The purpose of confederate monuments was and is to honor white supremacy. That is why they were erected and that is why people continue to defend them.

If you care about Robert E Lee's memory, you should be demanding all the statues taken down, since he was vehemently against war memorials, saying something along the lines of "people need to come together and heal rather than have the reminders of worse times."
