Today's piece is probably gonna bring in some negative comments in b/c I praise both Jay Inslee and Joe Biden and don't even mention Ron DeSantishttps://polimath.substack.com/p/in-praise-of-yelling-fix-it …

I contrast this "thing we thought would make a big difference but doesn't" with "thing I had no idea would work, but apparently works great" Jay Inslee told schools to go back to in-person class And they arepic.twitter.com/sgftwhswDs

Almost instantly the school districts stopped dithering. They stopped fighting over 3-feet vs 6-feet, they stopped stressing over "can the kids eat lunch together", they stopped blocking progress with detailed objections. They just said "OK. We're going back now b/c we have to"

I feel very much like the Biden administration did the same thing. "I don't care about whatever 13 Phase plan you have in place, make vaccines available to all by May 1st. Fix it."pic.twitter.com/Lg5GOkJzyv

In the long-term, it seems like bypassing any level of legislative or local government control is probably bad. On the other hand, we've been pushing, begging, pleading, and yelling at our school district for months with no movement from them. In fact, they moved backwards!

Local governments absolutely did not listen to their constituents. And we were rendered absolutely helpless by a teachers union that had far more sway than we did with the school district. How do we fix this? I don't know. But probably not incrementally.

It a general issue that the policy development crowd are way too concerned with creating detailed approaches to "maximize value." Simple is very good even if theoretically inefficient.

It's like everything else during the pandemic: the age restrictions only have an effect due to voluntary action. If the exemptions are numerous, people who want a vaccine will get them. Availability might be an issue for several more weeks though. But demand is a good problem.

I agree. And it's worth noting that there is very little interest in on-the-ground enforcement... and that's good! No one at the vaccine centers cares who you are or what you did so that an automated system barfed out some "you are eligible" email. Just go get your shot.

IDK, it seems the US government is getting 75% of what they want with vaccination rates and distribution that they are enormously satisfied with the system. Looking at the data I hold if the glass is 75% full and we going in the right direction.

I'm talking about state-by-state differences in vaccine policy. The differences are huge. The results are the same.
