Netflix made up these metrics to show they could addict people to just turning on Netflix and watching until they starved to death and that made their stockholders happy b/c stockholders are idiots who suck up whatever metric slop farmer Reed Hasting dumped in their trough

When all is said and done, building a fan base through community viewing is WAY more important in terms of viewer loyalty and brand reinforcement. Netflix's binge theory was novel but ultimately self-defeating.

Not only do I agree with you, I agree with their approach to this.

I think we're at a turning point and the Disney / HBO model will turn out to be the better one

Also the fact that episode endings don't feel exciting enough to watch the next one so you just passively binge along and forget what you were watching a few hours ago. I do hate what social media has done with the shared geekery whether it's GoT or TWD or the Mandolina

Your Weekly Standard cover story made the point that watching current shows is more worthwhile because you're part of a cohort talking about the show. The season dump means we're all watching at different paces.

I've said the same before. People talk about eg a season of Stranger Things once, vs weekly.
@Netflix took their insight that people like to binge, & used it as a distinguishing/branding characteristic, but people also like cliffhangers, repeated anticipation & communal enjoymentpic.twitter.com/zUUDzY6EGE

I don't think it's that esoteric. It's an opinion increasingly held by fans of TV and those in the business--not only is it more fun for viewers, but it helps the show gain viewers. More people are drawn in if people are talking about a new ep for 8-10 consecutive weeks.

I never binge watch partly because I don't have time and if I like something I want it to last. Don't think I ever watch more than 2 episodes of a 1 hour show or 3 episodes of a half hour show in one night. Usually its on only 1 per night and sometimes 1 per week.
