I need to read their proposals but relying on a legal solution is problematic when little gets to court and when cases do the process is traumatic for the victim and often the perpetrator remains unchanged.
Labour’s ‘green paper’ on VAWG starts at the wrong end of the problem. Longer sentences aren’t a deterrent when hardly anyone is convicted of serious crimes like rape. What needs addressing urgently is a broken criminal justice system that treats victims like perpetrators.

They also talk about fast-tracking rape cases. It does take too long to get them to court but that won’t necessarily mean more convictions. No mention of the CPS, as far as I can see, although it has a central role in the way victims are treated (very badly, in my view).

Jess Phillips tried to explain it on Today, but it didn't maje much sense. At one point admitted to Justin Webb that prison did "not especially" work... Really not clear what the new policy *is*, even explained by the MP whose project it is!

those very rare convictions, however, result in weak sentencing too.
#VAWG is a malicious hate crime against female people and should be treated as such. a longer sentencing is a good start. no perpetrator of VAWG will be deterred by anything due to systemic+systematic misogyny. -
I know that sounds bleak. but truth is just that. the only deterrent I can think of is the removal of patriarchy and that won't happen anytime soon. misogyny has been systemic for over 7K yrs. ending it will be much more difficult which is why perps almost always evade justice.
