    I follow lots of folks from lots of different backgrounds: there’s academic Twitter, church Twitter, people-who-study-religion Twitter, but pretty much the thing they all share is that I’m 90% sure we all play D&D and/or Magic: the Gathering.

    I’ve thought about this ever since I read a Rohr book. Love him or hate him — I’m uninterested in those debates — he does little to quench the thirst of souls in the desert. I mean, we have Augustine, Teresa, Julian, Thomas, the Cloud of Unknowing, Merton, Pentecostalism; y’all!

    Thinking about the Richard Rohr hubbub, and a conversation I had yesterday about the sorry state of spiritual formation in mainline seminaries and I'm wondering: How much of the fascination with Rohr et al is because people want real spirituality & we don't give it to them?

    I suspect that much human interaction more broadly is something like this: accidentally destroying the world of someone you care about and being totally oblivious about it. Hence the absolute necessity of forgiveness, yet our utter inability to actually do it

    I need to know why RVW’s “Fantasia on the Old 104th Psalm Tune” was panned by critics and continues to be benched by conductors to this day. It’s clunky — it’s an OG Psalm Tune, he tells you that in the title! — but the cadenzas are sheer fire.

    Do y’all ever think about that one time when maybe the smartest person in the history of theology had such an overwhelming experience at the Eucharist that he stopped writing and felt that all of his work seemed like straw compared to what/who he had encountered there

    Welcome to debt talk again. So really my biggest issue with people who “paid off their loans and it was hard then too” from pre-1989 education is that their debt existed in car terms. Ours exists in mortgage terms. Two cars is hard but doable. Two mortgages is impossible.

    First years at UChicago in some HUM Cores read (portions, alas!) of the Confessions, and it’s amazing to watch them take seriously ideas like sin and eternity and time, when even our churches don’t take time to treat these ideas seriously...!

    Challenging college freshmen to read the whole of *Confessions* is good. There’s a temptation to stop after book 9 or 10 because the last books are difficult. But it’s good for them to see it might take serious effort to learn about the LORD.

    You ever think about how pentecostals will pray over a handkerchief and give it to a sick person as a conduit of divine healing... yet believe Communion is just eating some bread and drinking some juice that reminds us of Jesus??? Lol. I'm sacramental because I'm pentecostal.
