Environmental professions can be alienating for Black people due to exclusion & lack of diversity. This , we're profiling Black British people who are breaking the green ceiling, inspire us to go outdoors & demonstrate how powerful representation is.

May be ridiculous but all this “green and pleasant land” stuff sits uneasily, for some of us at least. Because we know what some others are thinking, whether mourning a past in some areas of Britain, or holding on to a present in others

it's always funny when people glorify the natural beauty of the british countryside because it's one of the most ecologically sterile places on earth, the beauty is entirely man-made

So many efforts I've seen focus on extra mentoring, outreach, and extracurricular programmes - all important but what about the children who are left out? Or those who struggle at uni because of prior negative educational experiences?

TW: sexual violence, racism - UK this is how Black children are treated in this country. We cannot address racial disparities in academia without addressing the criminalisation and adultification of Black kids at school, and the trauma many carry into uni.

And how many organisations are actively providing spaces where these traumas can be named, spoken about and healed with nature as a compassionate witness?

How many environmental organisations are connecting the dots between Black people being seen as a threat and dehumanised by the state from infancy and subsequently not wanting to access predominantly white green spaces?

How many ecotherapists, nature connection coaches, equine-assisted therapists are prepared to help young Black girls like Child Q and older Black women heal the wounds of misogynoir through connecting to nature?

Everything is interconnected, but how many organisations seeking to work with young Black people are equipped to support them in healing these wounds?

So many of us are carrying the trauma of systemic oppression in our bodies, minds and souls. Our spirits are fractured, and though being in nature has the potential to heal, this is often missing in conversations about diversifying access to nature and environmental professions.

It can also be about reclaiming ownership of our bodies after our agency has been ripped away from us, seeing ourselves as part of the interconnected web of life after being isolated from our true selves and our communities as a result of state violence.

Being in nature isn't just about exercising, getting fresh air or observing flora and fauna. It's not just about categorising birds, trees, flowers and the like.

Every single institution that touches the lives of Black people, from pre-conception to death, often causes grave harm and trauma. This is why we need to be centring healing justice in our conversations about access to nature.
