Sounds just like the way vision folks felt about #deeplearning before AlexNet.
AlexNet did, but previous convnets didn't, because vision people didn't consider MNIST etc. real problems. That's precisely the point.

Did the convnet papers claim solving MNIST was solving vision? Nothing wrong with toyish probs, but need to acknowledge their toyness.
