Half of the female STEM faculty in the US were hired over more qualified men.

I've seen many times in industry where this is exactly what happens. Women over look more qualified men in order to hit a quota.

“Many times,” eh? Tell us about the time a woman was hired or promoted over you, making you jealous and resentful.

Never. I've only observed this through other female staff telling me how some of the women panelist were towards the male interviewees.

Comeuppance doesn’t justify such bias, but women have been on the barrel end of this stuff for most of history. And for what it’s worth, my wife has sat on perhaps ten academic search committees over the years. Not once did she observe or practice bias against male candidates.
