Half of STEM faculty are hired over someone more “qualified”, it’s ultimately a human process and there’s no algorithm that will spew out bias-free candidate rankings. Also lol at anyone who thinks universities will throw start up $$ at someone they think won’t be successful.https://twitter.com/pmddomingos/status/1477435086874169346 …
No, Lev. It's a guesstimate based on a close reading of the evidence, which could well be wrong, but I haven't seen a better one from anyone. What's your best estimate?

Ok I take it back — I cannot know your motive. As I’ve said I think the entire system is distorted. There is almost no longer any metric (awards, grants, etc.) that is not “tainted.” So I cannot fathom how to come up with a number. Clearly in the sciences it’s easier for women.

But is it that most candidates are close calls w/ ties broken in favor of certain groups or is there a large bias in a few cases? I don’t know. It depends on the distribution of applicants. I guess 50% isn’t a crazy guess, but it feels made up. (also a weird statistic to look at)
