You are wrong! Twice as likely to get hired doesn’t mean that half females hired over more qualified males, unless you assume male and female candidates come from the exact same quality distribution, for which you have no evidence! For someone teaching stats this is embarrassing!

Hear me out. One could argue that if there are social stereotypes against group X to entering career Y, then the people who actually *do* make it through from group X could be more qualified than the averaging person in career Y.

For example, the marginal student of group not-X, going with the stereotype, enters the field because their friends did. The person of group X enters the field despite their friends not doing do, because they are highly committed.
