I don't get affection for the Confederates. Laying out their major sins in ascending order, they were racist traitors who lost.
For people in the South, they represent a lost way of life, whether we like it or not. And they were fighting for their right to secede. (Read James McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom".)

In my entire life in the south I met one person with legitimate nostalgia for the confederacy, and he turned out to be legitimately insane. I think the idea of broad based nostalgia may be overblown.
