Probably the thing that academia most changed my mind about is the power of reason. I was always skeptical about it, but I did naively believe that good arguments were more powerful than bad ideologies. I no longer believe that. Bad ideologies are often vastly more powerful.

I'm reading "Fatal Discord" and I'm struck by how basically all the key disciples of Erasmus (the prototypical reasonable, peaceful, academic humanist) abandoned him for Lutheran tub-thumping which was more ignorant but also more emotionally and socially satisfying.
