Our current math is about as sophisticated as retina + V1 + V2 (which is why that’s all we can - barely - understand). Your full visual cortex etc. would leave QFT in the dust if it was evolutionarily useful.

Yes, but it wasn't. And, nevertheless, we developed QFT, QED, QCD, ..., which are certainly not based on intuition. Other parts of our (collective) brain opened up windows to reality way beyond our perception and intuition.

Not *our* brains, which evolution hardwired to work at certain space-time scales and with certain innate physicas (e.g. locality, "objectiness", some space-time equivariance,...). For that to work, we would have to re-evolve different brains and (very) different senses.

Our brains are much more general than you assume. E.g., we easily understand scenes that are vastly different from anything we evolved with. (And QFT still assumes all of that.)

Scenes with vastly different contents, but with a common underlying physics. Shrink a human to 1mm and have him interact with water or wind, and he totally fails in doing anything, including moving.

So what? QFT is also based on our intuitive visual understanding of things like the double-slit experiment. You’re overestimating the power of formal math and underestimating the power of the brain’s algorithms, which operating directly on quantum data would blow away QFT.

Quite the contrary: QFT is not based on intuition. The fact that interference happens even for single particles (or any other non-local feature of QFT) simply violates human intuition. QFT is quintessentially a mathematical construction, inaccessible to human intuition. 1/2

You’re still mixing up Systems 1 and 2. This is not about intuition, it’s about your brain being a more powerful mathematical machine than what’s used in physics. Doesn’t seem like my point is getting across.

Sorry Pedro, but no. It doesn't make sense to say that S2 is more powerful than mathematical physics, itself a product thereof, organized in science-producing societies. Modern science is way beyond the grasp of (and couldn't have been built by) any S2 of any individual.

No, what I’m saying is that S1 is more powerful, *not* S2. Clearly my point has not come across at all. I’m saying your S1 does physics-relevant math much better than modern science, as illustrated by humans vs. robots. Anyway, let’s take it up F2F when we get the chance.

Sure, let's discuss this sometime. But we're back at the starting point. Humans (S1) are better than robots only at certain tasks, at the space-time scales in which brains evolved. Robots can be much more precise (surgery), or much faster, than any human. 1/2

System 1 is just a large collection of heuristics to deal (without thinking, S2) with the world around us, thus it is fine-tuned by evolution and early learning to our macroscopic space-time scales. It fails miserably in unfamiliar situations, and it is very hard to retrain.
