I always thought the other way around. The word is continuous and without definite boundary between its parts, but representing it as discrete things is often handy for humans.
The experimental evidence is incontrovertibly that the universe is discrete.

Surely I don't know enough about this, but experimental evidence are always dependent on an underlying theory that defines the space of possible events. So I'm not convinced. Otherwise I'll draw a square and prove the word is continuous because I measured the diagonal

It's not. What you call "incontrovertible evidence" is a statement about measurement devices than the universe. Whether the universe is continuous or discrete is ill-posed and not exactly nswerable. Thinking of it as discrete does give a useful système du monde, but that is it.
