The fact that life appeared almost immediately after the Earth settled down implies that it’s widespread across the galaxy.

Ah, now I see. By "it’s widespread across the galaxy" you meant that are lots of planets like Earth, rather than most planets. But why limit it to the galaxy? :-)

Although I don't think single celled life evolving into humans is commonplace. If we play the earth movie a billion times would we always end up with something as intelligent as humans? I doubt it. We got really lucky with the asteroids wiping out the dinosaurs etc. (1)
