Subsidizing college only makes it more expensive.

Because those rankings (1) do not measure quality of education. Like not at all, (2) are designed to evaluate the prestige of large US-style English-speaking research universities for 4-year bachelors. Europe has a very different way of organizing its higher education system.
I wasn't talking about rankings. You really think European universities in general are better than US ones? So why do foreign students choose the US ones in such large numbers? And again: higher ed in Europe is far from free, so your point is not valid.

There are very few undergraduate students from Western Europe in American universities.

But many graduates. And in the other direction? Even fewer. But that’s OK, no one can make you see something you don’t want to see. (A little gratitude for the system that made you as successful as you are wouldn’t be out of place, though . . . sigh.)

Because "foreign" students know English already while they would have to learn a whole new language to study in any European country!

Although this has changed a lot: nowadays most Master's/PhD programs are taught completely in English and people in general are less hesitant to speak English - so maybe we'll see even more "foreign" & international students soon in European universities;)

Most foreign students who have money choose US because of English and job prospects after graduation. They are afraid to learn a new language and thats why they choose US, UK, Canada and Austrailia. Although Canada has become more popular option then US.
