Public education is not free. Yes, the US has a few great schools, but your argument is a little undermined by the large number of mediocre to poor, yet expensive schools in the US. Does the US have reasonably priced good quality higher education? Now shop EU for same public $

Those mediocre but expensive schools are made possible precisely by government subsidies. That's my point. (And on your point: foreign students flock to American universities despite the cost. They're voting with their feet. European universities, with a few exceptions, suck.)

No, I don’t. Lamborghini is pricy but Toyota is more affordable. You can argue Lamborghini has better quality but we really need more affordable Toyotas to benefit the majority.
