I’m curious. Why does Von Neuman beat out all of the stiff competition in the 20th century? Turing, Einstein, Feynman, Planck, Bohr, Heisenberg, Dirac, Schrödinger, de Brolgie, Tesla, Gell-Man, Ramón y Cajal, Golgi, and many many others.
Greatest impact. All computers have his architecture. Game theory is the mathematical foundation of social science. Etc.

I haven’t heard that take before, but it’s a compelling argument given the prevalence of the Von Neumann architecture, especially in modern science. I like it.

Speaking of greatest impact, if tomorrow someone launched a nuclear missile (or several), would that make Einstein 20th century's greatest scientist?

It would have little to do with Einstein, and it would be negative impact (i.e., less than zero).
