Meritocracy is maybe a bad word because some people think it’s related to morality. A better word in my opinion would be “resultocracy” - results and productivity are all that matter.
The beauty of meritocracy is that it works regardless of how ability is distributed or what influences it. Any scheme that assumes specific answers (e.g., ability is equally distributed) is much less likely to work.
