It's very far from obvious. As you properly pointed out, nobody knows the cost of not decarbonizing. Thus, you do not know the benefit of decarbonization.

We do know the cost of decarbonization. In the face of an unknown of life-on-earth changing proportions, the correct response is the cautious one: decarbonization.
