Hi. Scientist here with several active NSF grants. “Broader Impacts” is a standard requirement for NSF proposals. These often include community outreach that is added to the scientific work. It is unsurprising that these terms are increasingly included.
The “Broader Impacts” requirement is precisely the problem. If you can’t see how it’s a vehicle for imposing politics on science, you really need to wake up.
