I must have missed the whole “industry stage” part of the string theory.
Research fields have a life cycle: from fragile flower to industry to zombie. E.g., quantum computing is currently in the fragile flower stage, AI in the industry stage, and string theory in the zombie stage.

Unless I misunderstand the meaning of the "industry stage," I don't think that string theory was ever in that stage

"Industry" in the sense of there being a lot of people doing it. (String theory certainly qualified circa 1990.)
