This seems like a timescale issue. “Because it is” now. Sure. But how did it get that way? Isn’t it called systemic racism because nobody in particular is making the determination, but rather it’s embedded, legacy algorithms?
Redlining laws are outdated. If an ML algorithm selects zip code as a predictor of credit risk, it's because it is, not because the algorithm is using it as a cover for racism. Duh!

It's certainly not racism, but the application of the algorithm at a large scale may affect the zip code's credit risk. There's a complexity issue here.

But the question we need to ask is- is there a causal link between zip code and credit risk? Is zip code a confounding variable, or are there other confounding variables? It is unwise and inefficient to take the predictions of ML Algorithms at face value without delving deeper
