With a massive base of rich people to tax and a progressive one-party state, California should be a workers' paradise. So why are they fleeing in droves?

Because its success and lack of mass housing development make it too expensive. The hope for many is that they can get the work they got in California elsewhere. Time will tell if this is indeed true. Ultimately though it boils down to the education of the population.
