I think it is happening in an opposite order. The ML is pretty popular in theoretical physics/chemistry but it’s adaptation in the experimental domain is much slower (due to lack of labeled data, out-of-distribution effects, etc.)
Machine learning has already invaded experimental physics. Now it's time for it to invade theoretical physics. E.g., what are better basis functions than particles and waves? How is spacetime induced from observations?
