A tautology. Where does the brain come from? Isn't the brain part of the simulation itself?

The brain is part of the simulation yes, but this isnt circular. The brain that exists within the simulation isn't the real brain, its just a very simplified model of the brain

Close your eyes. Tap your little toe with your left hand. Now tap your nose with your right hand in sync with the left. The taps are only in sync in your brain. Due to the longer and shorter travel path from your toe and nose the tapping is actually happening at different times.

usually a simulation is an ephemeral phenomena and usually the elements of the simulation are not aware of it. Since we are part of a simulation AND also aware of the source, I must conclude we are living in a reality and not a simulation..
