Very true! Language is a human problem, but we have a tendancy to write the humanity out of it.

SCIENCE in general tends to create a shallow "universal man" model where subjective experience is marginalized out in the end. But guess what is the most subjective descriptor on earth? "Natural" language.

This is a quagmire, to build the context language is the first frontier, and hence most NLP algorithms try to approach the problem by solving the first frontier. This puts people at unease when they realize algorithms optimize this issue by devising their own signaling systems

The successes of these big black box models must be a little maddening to someone like Chris Manning who actually knows linguistics.

To be fair however, what does 'knowing linguistics' even mean however? It means our 'human take on it'. Which is very valuable, to be sure, but may not cut it. It was initially a surprise to see the visual cortex function as it does (e.g., detecting edges and direction)..
