Silly idea: before we go to Mars, why don't we build a self sustaining city in Antarctica? It's infinitely easier, lot cheaper to get stuff there, has plenty water, carbon dioxide and what not. Plus would be a great place for tourism...

Been there in the Biosphere2. Very impressive stuff. And very disappointing and surprising it actually failed. To me that is probably the biggest evidence that all this nonsense about colonizing mars is probably centuries away.

Biosphere was just poorly designed. They could have easily created a sustainable and self-correcting ecosystem but they did not choose the most productive biomes that they could have. There is a good documentary on HBO on how it was not a genuine effort, and mostly just for show.
