Reasoning that is unmotivated can never begin, by definition.
All reasoning is motivated, even proving a theorem. What matters is whether it's sound.

ESPECIALLY, proving a theorem, whether it's for a test grade, tenure, or glory. Even if honest, we are eager to fool ourselves. So we need referees. See my AEJ with Harbaugh; in the first version, pur theorem was even stronger, but wrong.
